The Research Centre Indian Ocean (RIO) at GUtech in the Sultanate of Oman advances sustainable development in the Indian Ocean region by integrating RIO’s rich heritage in cultural studies with pioneering research in ocean sustainability and economic diversification. We aim to foster interdisciplinary collaborations that drive policy-making and industry innovation, positioning Oman as a hub for sustainable blue economy.

RIO serves as a scientific hub and communication platform for research in the Indian Ocean region, which holds over 50% of the world’s population. It collaborates with institutions such as the Aga Khan International University (London) and CIVIS at the University of Jamshoro (Pakistan).
Goals
- Research Leadership: Elevate RIO as a global leader in research that bridges the gap between historical maritime studies and modern sustainable oceanic practices, leveraging Oman’s unique geographical and cultural position.
- Economic Diversification: Promote economic diversification by developing sectors like renewable marine energy, sustainable fisheries, and eco-tourism, aligning with global sustainable development goals (SDGs).
- Sustainability Initiatives: Implement research and initiatives focused on marine conservation and sustainable resource management, contributing directly to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and other relevant SDGs.
- Educational Outreach: Enhance education and outreach programs to build local and international capacity in maritime and oceanic studies, preparing the next generation of leaders and innovators in the sustainable ocean economy.
- Cultural Integration: Continue to honour and integrate the region’s rich historical and cultural heritage into research and development projects, ensuring that economic advancements are respectful of and informed by the past.
- Global and Local Collaboration: Strengthen existing partnerships and forge new ones with key global and local institutions to enhance the region’s contribution to and benefit from the global economy, focusing on sustainable practices and innovation.
- Informed Policy Making: Act as a key advisor to governments and international bodies on policy development related to maritime trade, ocean resources, and environmental sustainability, leveraging historical insights and modern research findings.
