Webinar Concept & Objectives
Observed annually on 8 June, World Oceans Day underscores the indispensable role of oceans in sustaining life on Earth and calls for collective global action towards their conservation and sustainable use. Covering over 70 percent of the planet’s surface, oceans regulate the global climate, support immense biodiversity, and provide livelihoods and food security to billions of people worldwide.
This international webinar seeks to examine integrated and pragmatic approaches to enhancing resilience across interlinked domains. By bringing together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, the session features distinguished speakers from various countries sharing diverse national and regional perspectives to strengthen governance frameworks and identify actionable pathways.
Executive Brief
Concept Note
Observed annually on 8 June, World Oceans Day underscores the indispensable role of oceans in sustaining life on Earth and calls for collective global action towards their conservation and sustainable use[cite: 16]. Covering over 70 percent of the planet’s surface, oceans regulate the global climate, support immense biodiversity, and provide livelihoods and food security to billions of people worldwide[cite: 17].
“The Indian Ocean constitutes a vital lifeline for regional economies, coastal
communities, and maritime heritage. However, it is increasingly subjected to
mounting pressures arising from climate change, biodiversity degradation,
overfishing, marine pollution, and unsustainable coastal development [cite: 20].”
This international webinar brings together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to examine integrated and pragmatic approaches to enhancing resilience across these interlinked domains[cite: 26, 27]. Key highlights focus on nature-based solutions like mangrove and coral restoration, advancing sustainable fisheries management to ensure food security, and promoting the preservation of underwater cultural heritage as a valuable resource for research, education, and sustainable maritime tourism[cite: 26].
Strategic Focus
Webinar Core Pillars
Sustainable Fisheries
Mitigating the vulnerabilities of overexploitation and volatile ocean dynamics to support regional
food infrastructures[cite: 21].
Ecosystem Protection
Deploying proactive nature-based frameworks to reverse rapid coral reef, mangrove, and seagrass degradation[cite: 22, 26].

Cultural Heritage
Protecting historical underwater assets to unlock value for academic research and eco-tourism[cite: 24, 26].
